MixHaus Gallery: Contemporary Art Meets Comfort’s Local Spirit
Walk through the doors of MixHaus Gallery and Comfort suddenly feels a little different.
Inside a 1907 brick building on High Street, historic walls frame contemporary paintings, sculpture, ceramics, encaustic work, fiber, metal, and other mixed-media pieces. The juxtaposition suits the town. Comfort may be known for its 19th-century architecture and German heritage, but its story has always included people willing to think differently.
MixHaus takes that independent streak and gives it a contemporary visual language.
Founded by artist and interior designer Cara Hines, the gallery evolved from Studio Comfort Texas, which opened in 2019. Hines reimagined the space as MixHaus after becoming its sole proprietor, developing a gallery centered on mixed media, multidisciplinary work, artistic experimentation, and the stories behind how art is made.
Art You’re Meant to Spend Time With
MixHaus isn’t a gallery that requires you to know the vocabulary before you walk through the door.
Exhibitions are curated to encourage curiosity. A painting might share a room with ceramic sculpture, metalwork, encaustic, fiber, or an object that resists easy categorization altogether. The gallery represents primarily Texas artists while also looking beyond the state for artists whose work aligns with its interest in innovation, collaboration, and authentic expression.
That variety makes wandering through the space part of the experience. Look once and notice the overall composition. Look again and you may find yourself interested in texture, process, material, or a detail you missed entirely the first time.
“MixHaus is more than a gallery. It’s a gathering space.”
- Cara Hines, Owner
A Gallery for Collectors—and the Art-Curious
Buying art can sometimes feel intimidating. MixHaus works against that.
The gallery serves established collectors, private clients, interior designers, and hospitality projects, but the underlying philosophy is connection: finding artwork that brings meaning and character to a space rather than simply filling an empty wall. Art advisory services help clients navigate selection and placement, while exhibitions offer casual visitors an opportunity to experience artists they may not encounter elsewhere.
For travelers, that makes MixHaus more than another stop on a shopping itinerary. A piece purchased here carries a particular sense of place—not necessarily because it depicts the Hill Country, but because you encountered it here.
More Than a Gallery
MixHaus also functions as an intimate gathering space for meetings, retreats, and curated experiences centered around conversation and creative exchange. Across the street, Hotel Giles adds another layer to the idea, making the gallery part of a small downtown ecosystem where art, historic architecture, lodging, food, and local businesses exist within a few steps of one another.
That setting matters.
Contemporary art can feel entirely at home in Comfort because independent thought has deep roots here. The German Freethinkers who helped establish the community valued intellectual freedom and questioning convention. MixHaus doesn’t attempt to recreate that history; instead, the gallery carries a related spirit forward through artists who experiment, reconsider familiar materials, and approach their work from unexpected directions.
Why It Works
MixHaus gives visitors permission to be curious.
You don’t have to arrive knowing an artist’s résumé or understanding a particular technique. Start with the simpler question: What am I drawn to?
Then look closer.
That sense of discovery makes the gallery feel particularly right for Comfort—a town where the old buildings tell one story while the people occupying them continue writing another.
