Comfort, Texas: Where Birders Belong

Binoculars, Backroads, & the Best Birding

The perfect birding getaway starts with a quiet morning, a breath of fresh air, and a place where nature takes center stage. Nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country along the Guadalupe River, Comfort offers easy access to some of the region’s best birding habitats. Numerous parks provide opportunities to spot sought-after species like the Golden-cheeked Warbler and Black-capped Vireo. Combined with comfortable lodging, delicious dining, historic streets, and scenic drives, Comfort is the ideal destination for birders looking to savor each and every moment.

Friday: Friday: Peace, Plants, & Pizza

Begin your weekend by checking into one of Comfort’s inviting accommodations. The Meyer Hotel offers riverside views and a modern country interior perfect for a pair, while Red Barn Oak Retreat is well-suited for larger groups, providing a rustic backdrop surrounded by peaceful native landscapes. Additionally, Riven Rock Ranch is located on 350 acres of outdoor, Hill Country beauty and filled with twice as much Southern charm. All three offer a relaxing home base for a weekend spent exploring the natural beauty of the Hill Country.

Once you’re settled, stop by RA Texas Nursery, Gravel & Stone to stretch your legs and browse native Hill Country plants that attract birds, butterflies, and other pollinators. It's a great place to gather ideas for creating wildlife-friendly landscapes at home and a must-need stop for nature enthusiasts.

For dinner, enjoy a meal at BRene’s Kitchen for classic diner bites or swing by Comfort Pizza to try one of their specialty house pizzas. The slower pace of a small-town evening makes it easy to unwind and prepare for an early morning in the field. As the sun sets, keep an eye out for resident birds settling down on the scenic drive back.

Saturday: Birds, Beats, & Boutiques

Birders know that the best sightings often happen early, so start your day with coffee and a light breakfast before heading to James Kiehl River Bend Park. This beautiful riverside park is one of the area's premier birding destinations, featuring bird blinds and walking trails along the Guadalupe River. The flat terrain makes it easy to observe the Hill Country wildlife without strenuous hiking. Another option includes the Riverside Nature Center which offers Bird Walk & Talks on the 3rd Saturday of every month along with other nature-centered weekend events.

Throughout the morning, watch for songbirds, woodpeckers, flycatchers, and herons among others moving through the river habitat. You may even have the chance to add Golden-cheeked Warblers or Black-capped Vireos to your life list!

After a rewarding morning outdoors, enjoy lunch at Both Hands Burger Bar to shift into a calm afternoon mood. Explore the locally owned shops, galleries, and boutiques or stop by the Comfort Heritage Foundation and the Treue der Union Monument to get insight on the town’s special history. To wrap up the afternoon, head over to western Comfort and enjoy a wine tasting at Bending Branch Winery, where shaded patios and Hill Country views provide a relaxing setting to reflect on the day’s sightings.

Dinner at Central Provisions and live Saturday night music at Remedy Hall offers an evening of entertainment to perfectly conclude the day before returning to your accommodations.

Sunday: Lakes & Lunch

Before departing, spend one final morning birding at Joshua Springs Park and Preserve. This lovely preserve combines spring-fed waters, bird blinds, and ADA walking paths to create excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.

The preserve attracts a wide variety of resident and migratory species throughout the year, making your every visit unique. Bring your binoculars, move slowly, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings as the Hill Country wakes up around you.

After your morning birding session, enjoy lunch at High’s Café. Their delicious homemade soups change daily and they offer a variety of healthy salads if you’re looking for something more refreshing. The relaxed atmosphere and selection of local wines and IPA beers make it the ideal place to cozy up before beginning the journey home.
